The history of the Department of Mathematics is intertwined with the establishment of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1949. At that time, it was known as the Department of Mathematics and Physics and was a small department with only six students in its first batch. In the academic year 1952-1953, the department gained a degree of independence and was headed by Dr. Hilmi Samara. The number of faculty members at that time was six.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Pursuant to University Law No. 28 of 1958, the Faculty of Science was established as an independent faculty consisting of the scientific departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It was incorporated into the university along with the other faculties that existed at the time.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Instruction in the departments of the Faculty of Science was conducted in English until 1972. At that time, the process of Arabizing the curriculum began, and a decision was issued that only one course would be taught in English in each of the four years of study. This in turn led to students distancing themselves from the library, as most of the resources, such as books and periodicals, were in English.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As for postgraduate students in our department, the language of instruction remained English. Students are required to write their theses in Arabic, except in cases of extreme necessity. The faculty returned two years ago to using English for instruction in undergraduate and postgraduate studies and in its various departments.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The department’s faculty have made great efforts to develop and advance the department despite their small number compared to the number of faculty in other departments. In addition, most of the courses they teach are theoretical. They have also contributed almost entirely to teaching mathematics courses to other departments in the faculty.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The department is also proud to have graduated a significant number of PhD holders in the last ten years, who are currently teaching and supervising in the department. Eleven of the current PhD-holding lecturers completed their Master’s and PhD studies in the department, and five others completed their Master’s in the department and obtained their PhDs from outside Iraq.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, fifteen of the eighteen assistant lecturers who are currently on the department’s staff obtained their Master’s degrees from the department itself.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, the department would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to all those who have contributed to the responsibility of chairing the department and to all those who have contributed to teaching and supervising its students since its inception. With God’s permission, the department will continue to develop and we seek help and success from God.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    To promote the educational process in the Mathematics Department to reach the highest level of quality and to graduate qualified students who are capable of logical thinking and possess scientific research skills to meet the needs of the labor market.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    1- Instilling a love of mathematics in students and clarifying its importance and applications in various life fields.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    2- Working to prepare qualified students to complete their postgraduate studies to obtain a master’s and doctorate degree, which the country suffers from a severe shortage of.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    3- Improving the quality of education to keep pace with the current technological development in world universities.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    4- Graduating students with a high level of scientific competencies to meet the needs of the labor market in the country.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    5- Graduating students with a high level of scientific competencies to work as teachers.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    6- Developing the undergraduate curriculum to keep pace with scientific developments and contemporary advancements.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    7- Qualifying cadres capable of dealing with advanced technologies and modern changes with all effectiveness and flexibility.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    8- Developing students’ skills and scientific abilities and local and international competition in the field of specialization.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    9- Promoting scientific research in the field of mathematics and studying mathematical and statistical problems and conducting scientific research to find appropriate solutions for them.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
