At its foundation is the time value of money, which distinguishes simple interest, calculated on the original principal, from compound interest, which accumulates on both the principal and previously earned interest. By discounting future cash flows, mathematical methods such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) support investment appraisal and capital allocation. Beyond profitability, probability theory, statistics, and stochastic modelling help quantify market risk, while liquidity analysis assesses a financial institution\u2019s ability to meet its obligations. In banking, mathematical models inform asset\u2013liability management and financial planning; in insurance, actuarial techniques underpin risk assessment, premium calculation, and reserve estimation. Yet mathematical models do not eliminate uncertainty: their reliability depends on data quality, assumptions, and realistic scenarios.
