The Department of Physics, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture titled “Superconductivity and Its Applications.” The lecture aimed to introduce the important properties of superconductors, the key theories proposed to explain this phenomenon, the crystalline structure of compounds, and their applications in civil, military, and medical fields. The lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Lamya Khudhair, included a review of superconducting materials, their scientific basis, types, and major applications, explaining that superconducting materials are elements or compounds that lose their resistance and become zero when cooled to temperatures below zero, such as using substances such as helium or nitrogen. They become superconductive, allowing the flow of current without energy loss, and can also transport very small currents. Additionally, they exhibit magnetic properties. It was emphasized that they become superconductive under critical temperature conditions, highlighting the use of superconducting materials in various aspects of life, including medical devices (magnetic resonance imaging), as conductors in electric power transmission without loss of current, seismic detection devices, precise magnetic detectors, trains, computers, and mobile phones.<\/h3>\n
