A Method of Generating Employment Opportunities for Youth Through the Cultivation and Production of Edible Mushroom Goods
The auditorium buzzed with anticipation as the College of Science at the University of Baghdad, Department of Biotechnology, unveiled an innovative project to create employment opportunities for youth through edible mushroom cultivation. Attendees engaged in demonstrations of low-cost sterile labs, substrate optimisation, and modular grow chambers that utilise agricultural waste for gourmet fungi production.
This initiative aims to equip graduates with valuable bioenterprise skills, including spawn inoculation and supply chain management, while igniting interest in expanding the project across Iraq. The following steps involve formalising training groups, securing micro-financing, and integrating mushroom biorefineries into local agricultural curricula, cultivating sustainable livelihoods and nutrition from this underground resource.
