The history of the establishment of the Department of Mathematics is related to the date of the founding of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1949 (and it was called the Department of Mathematics and Physics), as it was a small department, the number of students in the first batch was only six. In the academic year 1952-1953, the department became somewhat independent and was headed by Dr. Helmy Samara. There are only six faculty members.
According to University Law No. 28 of 1958, it was formed from the scientific departments of the College of Arts and Sciences, a stand-alone college called the “College of Science” and joined to the university with the rest of the colleges that existed at the time.
Teaching in the departments of the Faculty of Science was in English and continued until 1972, when he began to Arabize the curricula, and then a decision was issued to teach only one subject in English in each of the four years of study. The periodicals were in English.
As for the postgraduate students in our department, the language of instruction remained in English, and the students had to write their letters in Arabic, except in cases of extreme necessity. The college returned two years ago to the use of the English language for teaching in the primary and higher studies and in its various departments.
The department’s teachers have made great efforts to develop and advance the department, despite their small number compared to the number of teachers in other departments, in addition to the fact that most of the subjects they teach are theoretical, and they have almost completely contributed to teaching mathematics subjects to other departments in the college.

The department is also proud that, in the last ten years, it has managed to graduate a good number of PhD holders who are currently teaching and supervising in it. Eleven of the PhD holders of the teaching staff now have completed their master’s and doctoral studies in the department, and five others have completed their master’s degrees in the department and obtained their doctorate from outside Iraq.

Also, fifteen of the eighteen assistant teachers who are on the department’s staff now obtained a master’s degree from the same department. And last but not least, the department owes its thanks and gratitude to all who contributed to bearing the responsibility of heading the department and to all those who contributed to teaching and supervising its students since its establishment and until now, God willing, the department will remain in continuous development and from God we derive help and success.
