The Department of Earth Science ( Geology ) was opened and received the first group of students in 1954

 Department goals

1- Preparing a cadre as a specialist and familiar with the basics of earth science and its applications and capable of exploring natural resources and wealth and evaluating their reserves.

2- Teaching earth sciences to students of the department and other departments in the faculties of science and some other faculties of the university

3- Preparing scientifically specialized and qualified cadres to advance the scientific and industrial movement in the country through postgraduate studies

4- Active participation in conducting scientific research to preserve the environment, reduce pollution, and rationalize the rational use of oil, mineral and water resources

5- Contribute to solving scientific and industrial problems that contribute to serving the development plan in the country

6- Providing advisory services to the public and private sectors in the fields of geological specialization

7- Developing the capabilities and competencies of the employees of the departments working in the fields of earth sciences through the establishment of continuing education courses and other specialized courses

Services provided by the department to the community

The Department of Earth Sciences can carry out many of the works that serve the community in the fields of oil and mineral exploration, environmental studies, construction studies, roads, engineering fields and many other fields.

 Graduates’ future

Graduates can join to serve their country in various state departments and institutions, including the Ministry of Oil, Industry, Water Resources, Environment, Antiquities, Housing, Dams Departments, and Oil and Mineral Exploration

And work in higher education and education and many institutions and according to the requirements of the work because the geologist is a profession that is involved in all economic activities of society.

Graduate Description

Resources Natural resources play an essential role in human life at all levels and the continuous cultural and scientific progress in all sciences and fields depends entirely on natural resources or those made of them.

And geology on this basis is the person qualified to discover and extract natural revolutions from hydrocarbon sources, water and minerals, and accordingly, the geoscience departments in Iraqi universities have sought to have their graduates with the following specifications:

1- Full knowledge of the basic principles of earth sciences, their structures and resources

2- The ability to discover natural resources and assess their reserves

3- The ability to understand important natural phenomena such as floods, earthquakes and volcanoes, and to try to ward off their dangers

4- Understand the composition of minerals and rocks and their uses in industry and the use of alternatives to industrial resources

5- Preserving the environment and reducing pollution

6- Rational use of water, mineral and oil resources

7- Determining the geotectonic characteristics and specifications of the land, which helps in setting up projects and designing them and reducing their costs

The history of the Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences was established in 1953 as one of the departments of the College of Science at the University of Baghdad. Since its establishment and until now, it is still a source of science as it has spread geology sciences and contributed to providing scientific advice to many parties, especially the various state departments. And global.

The department also contributed to solving many scientific dilemmas regarding the specialization. This department has gradually developed from a scientific and administrative point of view, as its professors have contributed in authoring and translating many methodological books, and in all disciplines. The usual and his scientific sobriety trying to develop and keep pace with the global scientific renaissance.

Finally, we must remember, with love, respect and pride, to a fine group of colleagues whose names are mentioned below, who gave a lot of their time and effort by heading the department during the past decades. Without them, the department would not have reached this prestigious and distinguished scientific level at the level of Iraq and the Arab region. who died of them.
