Department Chair’s Speech

We welcome you to the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems, College of Science, University of Baghdad.

The department was established in 2015 after a thorough study of the labor market’s need to supply it with graduates who possess the skills of spatial analysis and geographic information systems (GIS).

The goal of creating the section:

The department aims to prepare spatial data analysts who have extensive experience in the field of geographic information systems, who are able to effectively contribute to the design and development of GIS systems, and they have the ability to analyze maps and satellite and aerial images and extract information from them. The department is not limited to offering programs for obtaining a bachelor’s degree, but rather, the department offers programs; To obtain both a master’s degree and a higher diploma in all these fields.

The Department of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems includes a selection of faculty members in multiple disciplines, creating a unique gathering of distinguished expertise concentrated in one department. The department was also keen to continue developing its study plans in line with the latest developments in the field of remote sensing and geographic information systems on the one hand, and the department was unique in Iraq to provide the country with graduates who have this experience. The department is witnessing a research movement among all its staff members, researchers and graduate students, which enables the department to be one of the most productive departments in scientific research at the university level.

Since its establishment in 2015, the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems has been headed by several professors, as shown below:

1- A.D. Faleh Hassan Mahmoud (2015-2016)

2- Prof. Harith Ibrahim Jaafar (2016-2018)

3- A.D. Sondos Abdel Abbas Abdullah (2018 – 2021)

4- A. P. D. Uday Hatem Shaaban (2021 – ongoing until now)
