The Department of Biotechnology, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture titled “Cancer Stem Cells.” The lecture aimed to shed light on the topic of cancer stem cells, which possess characteristics of stem cells, the ability for uncontrolled proliferation, the formation of various cell types, self-renewal, differentiation into multiple types, the ability to remain in a stem cell state for long periods, and unregulated proliferation, making them powerful in tissue regeneration and the formation of cancerous tumors. The lecture, presented by Assistant Lecturer Adyan Khalid, included a review of cancer stem cells and their impact on treatment. It highlighted their presence in tumors as a cause for additional challenges in cancer treatment. These cells may be less responsive to traditional treatments and play a role in tumor recurrence after treatment. This has made them a subject of debate in scientific research, prompting the development of new strategies to effectively target these cells with the aim of enhancing treatment effectiveness.
