Department head’s speech
We welcome you to the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Science at the University of Baghdad. The department was established in 2015 after an extensive study of the labor market’s need to provide it with graduates who possess spatial analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) skills. The Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems has played a pioneering role in graduating an elite group of students with distinguished skills, which is considered the first among scientific colleges, where the basic sciences curricula have been adopted to prepare graduates who possess such capabilities. The department has distinguished itself in its academic role through the expertise and scientific competence of its faculty members. And tightening its study plans and curricula, its laboratory equipment, and its advanced qualitative research. The aim of creating the department.
The department aims to prepare spatial data analysts who have extensive experience in the field of geographic information systems, who can contribute effectively to the design and development of GIS systems, and who can analyze maps and satellite and aerial images and extract information from them. The department is not limited to offering programs to obtain a bachelor’s degree, but rather, the department offers programs: To obtain both a master’s degree and a higher diploma in all of these fields. The Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems includes an elite group of faculty members in multiple specializations, creating a unique pool of distinguished expertise concentrated in one department. The department was also keen to continue developing its study plans in line with the latest developments in the field of remote sensing and geographic information systems on the one hand, and the department was also unique in Iraq in providing the country with graduates who possess this experience. The department is witnessing a research activity among all its members, including faculty members, researchers, and graduate students, which enables the department to be one of the most productive departments in scientific research at the university level.
