A workshop conducted by the University of Baghdad, titled ‘Observing Carbon Emissions in Baghdad via Remote Sensing Technologies,’ facilitated essential discourse among scientists, urban planners and environmental activists regarding the mitigation of carbon emissions in a rapidly urbanising region.

The keynote address underscored the importance of satellite technologies in delivering real-time data on carbon dioxide levels and other pollutants, highlighting the necessity of acquiring local emissions data to formulate effective environmental policies.

Discussions focused on the particular challenges Baghdad faces that are posed by such changes as population growth and aging infrastructure, which hinder effective emissions management. Breakout sessions emphasised the urgency of these concerns and the vital role of collaboration; it is through collective efforts that robust sustainability strategies can be developed.

Concluding remarks proposed a collaborative research initiative involving local universities, government entities and technology partners in generating actionable policy recommendations to reduce carbon emissions and enhance management practices in Baghdad.
