In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Greetings,

I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Biological Sciences, established in 1949 as part of the College of Science, initially known as the College of Arts and Sciences. The college began with five scientific departments located in Adhamiya. The College of Arts and Sciences remained as one unit until 1953, when the College of Science became an independent entity, as did the College of Arts.
Over the years, the College of Science has expanded, establishing additional departments and growing to include twelve departments and scientific units today. These departments provide undergraduate and postgraduate education and conduct scientific research, making the college a distinguished scientific institution in Iraq. The Departments of Zoology, Microbiology, and Botany formed the nucleus of the current Department of Biological Sciences.
In 1969, the Department of Zoology and Botany merged to form the Department of Biological Sciences. Since then, the department has seen significant development in its curricula and scientific research, with undergraduate and postgraduate studies conducted in Arabic. The department has been active in authoring and translating educational materials.
The Department of Biological Sciences aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge in various life sciences through advanced curricula that emphasize experimental learning and problem-solving. Our educational outcomes include the identification and classification of living organisms, understanding their evolutionary and genetic relationships, studying their physiology, and developing scientific research and critical thinking skills.
We are committed to contributing to the nation by preparing outstanding educators and researchers in various life sciences fields and enhancing scientific awareness within the Iraqi community.

With sincere regards,
Prof. Dr. Ahmed Saad Aldhamin Head of Department of Biology
