Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, and may God’s prayers and peace be upon the most honorable of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, upon him be the best prayer and the most complete peace.

The Tropical Area Biological Research Unit is one of the formations affiliated to the College of Science, University of Baghdad. Since its establishment in 2001, the Tropical Biological Research Unit has been distinguished as one of the most

Active research units with their scientific products and the solid and distinguished research of their affiliates published in prestigious local and international scientific journals, in addition to the research, scientific and advisory services provided to researchers and graduate students. The Biological Research Unit has four scientific laboratories specialized in microbiology, pathological analyzes, immunology and molecular biology, equipped with the latest laboratory equipment to conduct scientific and applied research that contributes to addressing the problems facing society. The members of the Biological Research Unit hold several distinguished training courses annually and since 2004, including the basic pathological analyzes course, the course of using ELISA technology in biological examinations, a course in the principles of clinical sampling and biological models, and a course in the principles of biostatistics. In addition to holding many seminars, scientific workshops and discussion panels targeting graduates of the departments of life sciences, biotechnology and chemistry, as well as researchers in all universities and other ministries, with the aim of raising and refining the level of scientific and technical skills. The management of the Biological Research Unit for Tropical Areas, since its establishment in 2001, includes the best qualified and professional professors, who are as shown below: –

A.M.D. Shehab Ahmed Salman (2001-2005)

Prof. Ehsan Mahdi Al-Sager (2007-2014)

About the unit

The Tropical Zone Biological Research Unit was established on June 5, 2001 for the purpose of studying the environmental factors that affect the spread of tropical diseases in Iraq, which are among the most important pathogens of these diseases: bacteria, parasites, fungi, and leaching, in addition to the animals that store them (warehouses), and the media that transport them (water). air, soil and food), and its spread in different geographical areas in Iraq. As well as conducting research and studies, issuing specialized scientific periodicals, and establishing various scientific activities in cooperation with official authorities.

Many diseases of warm regions caused by leaching, bacteria and parasites related to the geographical region of Iraq (the diversity in the geography of Iraq’s regions from north to south) spread in Iraq. The terrain of Iraq is different and varied and includes mountains, valleys, plains, deserts and bodies of water. The spread of wild plants and animals varies according to the region, north and south, and this is reflected in the distribution and spread of the diseases under study, such as malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, cutaneous leishmaniasis (Baghdad grain), bilharzia, and intestinal diarrhea caused by bacteria and parasites such as cholera, water bags and others.

The best strategy to reduce the spread of these diseases is to identify the mechanisms of their spread and ways to control them. The Biological Research Unit for Tropical Areas actively contributes to creating specialized scientific staff, guiding graduate students, and creating a specialized scientific research center.

Unit Objectives

  • Working on finding postgraduate studies (higher diplomas and masters) for the purpose of preparing highly specialized scientific staff in studying the causes of tropical diseases and the factors affecting them.
  • Organizing seminars and workshops.
  • Organizing specialized scientific courses.
  • Research and studies.
  • Issuing health awareness brochures and folders.
  • Hosting and encouraging postgraduate students to fulfill the requirements of their theses and thesis in areas related to tropical diseases and their causes.
  • Drawing the epidemiological map of local pathogens in Iraq, in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

unit activities

Training courses offered by the unit:

The Biological Research Unit for Tropical Regions holds scientific courses specialized in basic pathological analyzes for holders of a bachelor’s degree from the relevant scientific departments. The course curriculum includes theoretical and scientific lectures in the field of laboratory analyzes (pathogenic microbes, pathogenic parasites, immunity, biochemistry, and blood diseases) for a period of 6 weeks per session, after which an academic certificate certified by the Presidency of the University of Baghdad is granted. The number of students graduating is approximately 970 students, with 46 courses.

Establishing a pathological analysis laboratory:

The pathological analysis laboratory was created and opened to provide services to university employees since April 2004 at reduced prices for university employees.

Supervision of postgraduate students:

A number of the unit’s professors teach and supervise postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) for the College of Science, Baghdad University’s scientific colleges and other corresponding colleges in other universities, and host many of them to complete their research in the unit laboratories.

The intention is to create postgraduate studies (higher diploma and master’s degree in the specialization of the environment of tropical diseases). The proposal was referred to the specialized committee to study the availability of appropriate conditions for development.
