The remote sensing unit was created by Ministerial Order No. BT / 1494 on 9/21/1999 and reported to us by the Baghdad University formal letter/ Scientific Affairs Department No. 37/15 on 10/12/1999.

The formal letter also included the ministry’s desire for this unit to be the nucleus of a research center in the future.

Unit Objectives

  1. Preparing research about remote-sensing applications in different scientific and applied fields.
  2. Supervising postgraduate students from Physics, Astronomy, Geology Departments, and other related departments to conduct remote sensing research.
  3. Participation in symposiums, training, and scientific conferences.
  4. Keeping up scientific progress by various means by developing and studying new research to meet our country’s requirements and natural phenomena.
  5. Concluding research contracts with government institutions in remote sensing fields and applications.
  6. Offering specialized courses in remote sensing, image processing, and programming for members of state departments

The vision

Due to the accumulated experience in the field of remote sensing, image processing, and information technology, and the availability of specialized staff in the college, the remote sensing unit is looking forward to being a department for postgraduate studies to:

  1. Preparing specialists in remote sensing and image processing subjects to provide the government institutions with the necessary expertise and skills from those with a higher degree.
  2. Expanding applied research studies to keep up to date the progress in these disciplines due to the recent interest in the technologies in the civilized world.

 Unit message

It is no secret to anyone the importance of studies and developed applications of remote sensing topics, especially according to expectations, that Iraq is on the verge of a new phase of construction and development through which all available capabilities can be harnessed to expedite the completion of the required tasks.

Remote sensing applications can be exploited to facilitate and speed up multiple jobs that require significant effort, including, but not limited to: forecasting water levels in Iraqi rivers, estimating groundwater quantities, helping discover the locations of some antiquities, raw materials, and natural resources under the ground surface, forecasting weather and climate conditions, and exploiting that in improving agricultural yields and their quantity, monitoring the growth of field crops, predicting the amount of work produced, producing high-scale maps and other topographical ones covering the surface of the country, assisting in the planning of cities and towns and construction of (highways, electric power lines, and railways..etc.). The above can be achieved by providing images and satellite data periodically.
