Keeping abreast of rapid developments in concepts and tools related to the use of information technology to support educational and research processes in the College of Science.
Objectives:
The main purpose of establishing the Communication and Information Technology Unit is to raise the level of use of information technology resources in the existing educational process in the College of Science. As the unit will provide its services to the college in the areas of:
1- Carry out maintenance work for computers and their accessories.
2- Expanding the work of the computer network in the college and ensuring the delivery of service to all departments.
3- Supervising the internet service and ensuring its provision for all college formations.
4- Organizing development courses in various fields of technology
5- Developing software systems supporting the operations of managing educational and administrative activities and achieving the standard factor in managing and following up on the mentioned activities.
6- Electronic archiving.
Unit work program:
The work of the Communications and Information Unit is divided into four main areas:
- Engineering reference and network management axis:
The work team will undertake the following tasks:
1) Determining the technical specifications of the devices and equipment for information technology, which represent the needs of the college in general.
2) Providing support and backing for the maintenance of computers and their accessories in the various college formations.
3) Follow up the work of the college’s computer network and ensure the continuity of the Internet service.
4) Implementation of network expansions on an ongoing basis.
- Supportive systems and applications axis:
The main objective of the work of this group is to develop computerized technical solutions that will automate the administrative, financial and oversight work of the college formations. The team will also seek to develop appropriate solutions for organizing electronic records for students. The modern concepts that have emerged during the past years with regard to the applications of distributed rules will be the focus of the researchers’ attention in this section, as the developments in this field should be followed up and an attempt to invest in building systems and applications that serve the various formations in the college (or at the university).
- Training and development focus:
The unit will conduct developmental courses in the field of computers, networks and their applications. As the rapid development in software tools and computer applications requires specialized cadres to provide the necessary ability to keep pace with these developments, and then those cadres transfer the acquired knowledge to those concerned to gain that experience and try to use it to develop their business.
- The focus of electronic archiving:
There is a need to convert the college’s documents from paper to electronic documents that can be stored on modern digital storage media, which will provide the ability to reduce the large spaces occupied by paper documents, and converting documents to digital form will enable workers to retrieve these documents quickly and with high accuracy. Those working in this field will undertake the task of coordinating with the college formations for the purpose of withdrawing documents using a digital scanner, and then adopting an electronic indexing system, which will enable archive workers to retrieve any document easily and with high accuracy.
