The Historical Journey of the Department of Earth Sciences
The Department of Earth Sciences was established in 1953 as one of the departments of the College of Science at the University of Baghdad. Since its founding and until now, it is still a source of knowledge, as it has published geological sciences and contributed to providing scientific consultations to many parties, especially the various state departments. Moreover, its geology students have graduated, among whom were scientists and specialists referred to in the statement, and they are still working in various Iraqi and Arab universities. And universal.
The department also contributed to solving many scientific dilemmas related to specialization. This department has gradually developed from a scientific and administrative perspective, as its professors have contributed to writing and translating many methodological books in all specializations, and its professors have provided solid scientific journals with their applied and academic scientific research. Despite the difficult circumstances that our dear country, Iraq, has gone through, the department has maintained its context. His usual scientific sobriety, trying to develop and keep pace with the global scientific renaissance. The department has achieved many scientific achievements at the level of postgraduate studies (Master’s and PhD), as well as at the level of various geological studies. Its students, under the supervision of their professors, were able to study the geology of Iraq and contribute to identifying the country’s natural wealth and resources, such as oil and gas wealth, and mineral resources such as iron, phosphate, bauxite, sulfur, and metallic ores such as zinc deposits. And lead, copper, chromium, as well as barite, as well as identifying the locations of building materials such as sand of all kinds, building stones, and quarries of raw materials for the production of cement and bricks. The department has contributed with its studies in constructing aggregate and concrete dams, creating artificial lakes, and digging ditches for land reclamation. The department also contributes to preserving the environment and combating desertification… The department has many diverse geological specialties, such as fossils, stratigraphy, geophysics, geochemistry, environmental pollution, economic geology, rocks, minerals, sedimentology, geomorphology, remote sensing, and geology. Structural, engineering, petroleum and water resources geology, environmental geology, and Quaternary geology.
Finally, we must remember, with all love, respect and pride, the fine group of colleagues whose names are mentioned below, who gave a lot of their time and effort by heading the department during the past decades. If it were not for them, the department would not have reached this distinguished and distinguished scientific level at the level of Iraq and the Arab region. May the Most Merciful bless them and may they rest in heaven. Of them who died.
