The Physics Department at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, is one of the leading academic and research departments in Iraq and the Middle East. Its mission is to provide high-quality education in the field of physics. The department offers advanced programs in both theoretical and practical physics and includes a faculty team highly qualified academically and in research to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The department strives to integrate education and scientific research in line with the progress goals set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, keeping pace with global advancements.
The Physics Department is continuously evolving in all research areas, enhancing its curricula, expanding its laboratories in both quantity and quality, and broadening its horizons and ambitions in line with the expansion of knowledge sciences.
The department is dedicated to focusing on its specializations and preparing students qualified to pursue postgraduate studies in Iraqi and international universities to meet the needs of universities and research institutions. Additionally, it emphasizes applications aligned with societal needs and the labor market.
The department features 10 lecture halls for undergraduate studies and 5 for postgraduate studies. It also has 11 laboratories for undergraduate studies, providing practical training for students, such as:
- Mechanics Laboratory and Electricity & Magnetism Laboratory for first-year students.
- Modern Physics Laboratory and Thermodynamics Laboratory for second-year students.
- Optics Laboratory, Digital and Analog Electronics Laboratory, and Laser Laboratory for third-year students.
- Solid-State Physics Laboratory and Nuclear Physics Laboratory for fourth-year students.
- Virtual Laboratory for third- and fourth-year students.
- Computers and Numerical Analysis Laboratory for second- and third-year students.
- General Physics Laboratory for non-physics students in the first year.
The department covers various fields of research, including:
- Thin Film Physics
- Plasma Physics
- Laser and Molecular Physics
- Laser and Electro-optics Physics
- Materials Physics
- Nuclear Physics
This diversity makes the department unique, housing seven postgraduate laboratories that cover all its specialties. These laboratories annually produce over 100 scientific papers published in prestigious international journals, gaining recognition and appreciation from the ministry, university, and college.
The department has organized numerous local and international conferences, drawing significant interest from researchers across Iraqi, Arab, and global universities. These conferences have enhanced the department’s substantial role in scientific research.
The department aspires to achieve program accreditation and enter global rankings by advancing research fields, diversifying them, adhering to quality standards, and implementing them.
We take pride in our department’s rich history, spanning 75 years of academic and research contributions, which have produced numerous graduates who have significantly served Iraq in higher education, scientific research, and other state institutions.
