The Department of Physics was founded in 1949 with the establishment of the College of Science at the University of Baghdad. Over the course of sixty years, the Department of Physics has been a generous and inexhaustible source of dissemination of science and the solution of many scientific dilemmas. It has produced many generations who have held many positions inside and outside Iraq. It is also distinguished by the fact that many of its sons have become World-renowned scientists.

The generations graduating from the Department of Physics have passed on the flame of giving, illuminating the path of knowledge for future generations and preserving their scientific, cultural and heritage heritage of the Department of Physics, which is characterized by its own way of life, customs and traditions that differ from the rest of the departments in the college or the usual contexts in the various departments and universities, as The atmosphere of one family with its many generations prevails in the interactions and dealings between the members of the department.

The Department of Physics is distinguished by its keeping pace with scientific progress and the latest scientific news in the entire world, as it holds many discussions, seminars and conferences that deal with all the latest developments in the broad physical sciences, not to mention the rest of the sciences and other fields of culture, to become a rich source of physical sciences and general culture.

Over the years, the Department of Physics has developed greatly in many aspects, scientifically, technically, and administratively, and it is always in a constant state of renewal. Postgraduate studies were opened in it in 1956 for master’s and doctoral degrees, until it has now become broad-spectrum and has a solid scientific standing. It has also expanded into the various fields of scientific research in physics until there is no room left even for It was accurate that the Physics Department had a long history and great influence on it.

The Department of Physics, with all its teachings, aspires to the best and most distinguished scientifically and culturally at the global level in order to rise to the levels of advanced international universities. Given the progress of physical sciences and their broad spectrum, the department aspires to transform into a college of physical and astronomical sciences that includes many precise scientific specializations required for the country’s development and the advancement of the scientific and technological level. And cultural towards a bright future, especially since it possesses all the scientific capabilities and human resources necessary to establish a distinguished college of physical and astronomical sciences, thus being the first in Iraq, the Arab countries and the Middle East at the level of its counterparts in advanced universities globally. As a result of the development taking place in the science of physics and its broad spectrum, research groups have been formed in the department since the beginning of graduate studies, which developed over time to become as follows: Thin film physics and superconductivity. Physics of electro-optics and nanotechnology. Laser and molecular physics and renewable energies. Plasma physics and technology. Nuclear and environmental physics. Materials physics. The remote sensing group, which later became an independent unit
