The Department of Biotechnology is one of the leading educational institutions. It was established in 1993 as a scientific department within the College of Science at the University of Baghdad, based on a future scientific vision and an analysis of the country’s future needs for qualified scientific personnel in applied life sciences, keeping pace with the increasing and accelerating developments in many countries worldwide.

The Department of Biotechnology has a distinguished history in scientific research and education since its establishment. The department has achieved remarkable accomplishments in medical, industrial, and agricultural applied sciences, in addition to academic achievements. The faculty members and researchers in the department have contributed to these accomplishments, as the department includes a select group of academic instructors holding master’s and doctoral degrees, who have significantly contributed to building a solid scientific foundation for this vital and important field in Iraq. They have also played a key role in graduating many cohorts of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree holders in the field of biotechnology, who now occupy advanced positions in many government, research, and private sector institutions in Iraq.

The goal of the Department of Biotechnology is to develop strategies for current and future scientific and technological projects and to advance society by relying on individuals with scientific qualifications in various research fields related to biotechnological applications. The department aims to keep pace with scientific developments and enrich them with scientific ideas and technological innovations in medical, industrial, agricultural, and environmental disciplines.

Upon graduation from the Department of Biotechnology, students have vast opportunities to work in various fields. Through distinguished academic programs and in-depth practical training, graduates acquire advanced skills and deep knowledge in medicine and health sciences.

The department’s graduates work in a wide range of fields, including clinical laboratory diagnostics, scientific research, academic teaching, healthcare management, health policies, medical entrepreneurship, and more. Their graduates excel in their professions and make significant contributions to the advancement of medical sciences and healthcare provision to society.

Through its advanced research, collaborative partnerships, and commitment to excellence in education, the Department of Biotechnology at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, continues to lead in the field of biotechnology, such as molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, and synthetic biology.
