The Department of Biology, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture entitled “Biological Hazards in the Laboratory”. The lecture aimed to familiarize researchers and postgraduate students with the essential precautions they should follow in the laboratory to ensure their safety and the safety of those working with them, regarding biological and chemical hazards and handling hazardous materials. The lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Janan Attieh Ghafel, covered the major biological hazards related to biological materials that pose a risk to the health of living organisms, primarily humans. It explained that this can include medical waste or samples from microorganisms, viruses, or toxins from biological sources that can affect human health. It warned that it could also encompass substances harmful to other animals, emphasizing that the term and associated symbol are typically used as a warning to alert those who may be exposed to these materials to take precautions and safeguard their health and the surrounding environment in the laboratory.
