The Biological Research Unit, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture entitled “The hookah and its health risks. The lecture aimed to spread educational and health awareness of the risks and raise awareness about the harms of smoking, which is a significant cause of human health problems, especially the cancer and heart diseases it causes. The lecture also focused on the economic and social impact of smoking on individuals, both smokers and non-smokers. The lecture presented by Dr. Haifa Nouri included a review of the ingredients that are used in the composition of cigarettes and identification of their harmful effects on the brain and lungs, as well as other parts of the body for the smoker. As for non-smokers or what is called (passive smoking), the lecture showed that it can be even more harmful, as they inhale cigarette smoke while breathing, in addition to confirming the harm of smoking, whether with a cigarette, pipe, or hookah, is no less severe than drug consumption, in addition to the psychological and societal problems that smokers are exposed to, especially the youth group.
