The Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture titled “Neonatal Screening test.” The lecture aimed to raise awareness about this important screening and the necessity of conducting it as quickly as possible, given its utmost importance in preventing and mitigating serious diseases and their effects. Dr. Zainab Zamil Khalaf delivered the lecture, reviewing the process of newborn screening, which is conducted in the first week of a child’s life to detect certain metabolic and genetic diseases and prevent their serious consequences. She explained that newborn screening in Iraq started in 2013 and includes the detection of three diseases: galactosemia (presence of galactose in the blood), phenylketonuria (PKU), and hypothyroidism. The lecture emphasized the importance of familiarizing with the necessary tests for newborns in the first week to enable early detection.
