The Department of Geology at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Second Karkh Directorate of Education in the Ministry of Education, organized a gathering to donate samples of rocks and minerals as part of the activities of the technological incubators project, which was called for by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This event was sponsored by the university’s president, Professor Dr. Bahaa Kazim Ansaf, and attended by the Dean of the College of Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Raed Faleh Hassan, and the Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Salam Ismail Marhoon, along with a number of Earth Sciences teachers from Baghdad’s education directorates. The initiative, supported by the College of Science’s administration, aimed to enhance the practical aspect of teach the subject of Earth Sciences in secondary schools and to support geologists who teach this subject in order to activate the practical aspect of this important applied subject. The Dean of the College delivered a welcoming speech to the Earth Sciences instructors, affirming the college’s support for scientific activities within and outside the college as part of its efforts towards cooperation mechanisms and memoranda of understanding, which it is keen to establish to make the college a hub for basic sciences by providing expertise, consultation, and support, including a new mechanism for fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The Head of the Earth Sciences Department mentioned that the donated samples aim to spread geological culture and are considered a complementary aspect of extracurricular activities, including organizing exhibitions in schools during events and highlighting the importance of this applied specialization. Moreover, they serve as a foundational component for laboratory work in secondary schools, similar to other branches of sciences, especially since most of the samples are from Iraqi environments, which will activate the practical aspect and highlight the role of scientific geologists in educational institutions.
