The Biological Research Unit and Tropical Regions, in collaboration with the Continuous Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific lecture entitled ‘Nature Reserves in Iraq’ under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Raad Falah Hasan. The lecture, presented by Mr. Ahmed Yousif Hanoun, aimed to introduce the concept of nature reserves and their importance for life, conservation of biodiversity, and maintaining environmental balance. It also focused on providing protection for endangered species and the role of international legal legislation in this regard. The lecture shed light on the significance of nature reserves, explaining their purpose and role in halting the encroachment of developmental and urban activities on natural landscapes. This is vital to safeguard the rights of both present and future generations to benefit from these ecological services. It urged for the formulation of a holistic conservation agenda to preserve the harmonious natural environmental processes and relationships, advocating for continuous monitoring over time. Additionally, it stressed the importance of conserving the diverse animal and plant species that inhabit these areas or rely on them as stopovers during their migrations.
