The Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, held a workshop titled “The Difference Between Word and LaTeX for Typesetting” under the sponsorship of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Raed Faleh Hassan. The lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Asawer Duraid Humaidi and Dr. Sima Abdul Sattar Mohammed, aimed to introduce the most important software or computer applications that can be used for formatting academic theses. It included both theoretical and practical lessons on installing the two programs, explaining their tools, features, applications, and the differences between them in the field of writing scientific research. The lecture provided an in-depth explanation of Microsoft Word, a widely-used tool for formatting academic theses. Additionally, it emphasized the significance of LaTeX, a specialized software for writing scientific papers, reports, and research. The presenters explained that LaTeX excels in accurately handling tables, images, graphics, and complex mathematical, physical, and chemical equations. However, they acknowledged its challenges, as it requires familiarity with numerous programming commands, given that it operates based on MARK UP LANGUAGE. Despite this, they assured that with hands-on practice Nonetheless, it becomes easier with practical application.
