The Department of Geology, in cooperation with the Development and Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, held the scientific seminar tagged “Geopark and Geotourism in Iraq” under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Raed Falih Hassan, and attended several under and postgraduates, academics, Geology specialists, and who expert in tourism, water resources, Archaeology, and Environment.

The aim of the symposium was to investigate the importance of geopark or the so-called geological park at the scientific, economic, tourist, investment and national levels of its geological profile and structure in central and southern Iraq and the settlement of civilizations as well as its objective to present new ideas and future aspirations for the conservation of biodiversity in new sectors of tourism in Iraq.

The seminar was presented by Professor Mu’taz Al-Dabbas, Professor Saleh Mohamed Awad, Professor Aqil Al-Zubaidi, Dr. Iman Ahmed Mohamed, and Dr. Hiba Saadoun Al-Maamar, to highlight the Tayyeb region as a proposed geological site and the importance of natural heritage and geopark in the Anbar desert and the Haj Youssef area as an important geopark site in Diyala.
