English language unit
The unit has an essential task to preserve the principles and foundations that it was established to achieve, which is to maintain the integrity of the English language through official correspondence and documents written in the English language. The most important goal of the English language unit is to directly supervise the college’s official website in the English language and provides assistance and correction to a large segment of college members working in the college of science at the University of Baghdad. Also, the unit seeks to build teachers’ potential and encourage their English language abilities. Consequently, they can use English as a language of communication during their academic years.
Objectives
- Maintaining the integrity of the English language in official correspondence and books written in the English language
Providing assistance and correction to a large segment of the faculty members, gentlemen and women working in the College of Science at the University of Baghdad
- Direct supervision of the college’s official website in English
- Holding courses, workshops, and seminars for faculty members, gentlemen, and women working in the College of Science at the University of Baghdad, in addition to postgraduate students from various disciplines and working according to a developed educational program.
- Seeking to build the capabilities of faculty members, gentlemen and women working in the College of Science at the University of Baghdad and encouraging their abilities in the English language.
Preparing all faculty members, gentlemen and women working in the College of Science at the University of Baghdad and instilling confidence in them by focusing directly on the English language with the scientific specialization they need.
- Creating a cultural and scientific environment that provides students with opportunities for self-development by providing them with comprehensive knowledge of the English language and its sciences.
- Encouraging critical understanding of the thought of the English-speaking world and its cultures and opening channels of cultural dialogue helps in learning and understanding different cultures and broadening the horizons of dealing with the other by teaching various literary texts.
- Communicate with the corresponding departments inside and outside Iraq to exchange experiences with them and benefit from their experiences in all fields related to research written in the English language.
The unit contributes to the service and enrichment of society by providing expertise and linguistic and translation advice in English to the college, educational institutions inside and outside the university, and governmental and non-governmental institutions.

- Raising the level of general performance through continuous evaluation of the unit’s inputs and outputs.
The message
The unit aspires and seeks to be a specialized academic tributary by providing integrated education according to quality academic programs to prepare scientifically qualified human cadres in the field of the English language. It keeps pace with scientific studies and research by developing their linguistic, intellectual and research skills and enhancing their sense of confidence, as well as encouraging innovative scientific research and pursuit to provide its requirements according to international best practices:
- To raise the level of English to the extent that they can use English as a language of communication during the academic years
- Improving the level of teaching to deal with scientific texts properly.
- The unit evaluates the linguistic dissertations and theses for postgraduate students in the scientific departments. The scientific research submitted for publication in the Iraqi Journal of Science, the scientific journal of the College of Science, is also evaluated. The unit aspires to establish an integrated language laboratory for the modern method of education to increase the absorption of learners.
- Translating official books from Arabic into English and vice versa, as well as college correspondences
- Supervising the website of the College of Science in English.
Structural:
The unit includes professors specialising in the English language who hold master’s and doctoral degrees and holders of scientific titles proficient in their language levels.
Tasks:
1- Raising the level of students and teachers in the English language to the extent that they can use it as a language of scientific, research and study communication.
2- Improving the teaching level to deal with the translation of scientific texts soundly.
3- Training teachers and students on the basics of the English language, the principles of translation and research writing.
4- Evaluation of research, letters and theses submitted for discussion and publication in scientific journals.
5- Translating official books from Arabic into English and vice versa.
6- Supervising the college’s English language website and translating news and all scientific activities on a timely basis.
The work of the English Language Unit is a scientific breakthrough and an important transition for the College of Science that can achieve a real intellectual renaissance. It opens up to the experiences of others by mastering this language. It is the product of the availability of educational environments and keeping pace with the advanced sober international universities with what it allows. Information to benefit from research and studies in line with the prestigious College of Sciences requirements in the field of the English language.
