Applications of the Minamata Convention: Safe Management of Mercury in Scientific and Research Laboratories
The Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop titled “Applications of the Minamata Convention: Safe Management of Mercury in Scientific and Research Laboratories.” The event was held under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Raed Faleh Hassan.
The workshop presented by Assistant Lecturer Hisham Naseer, Professor Dr. Asia Hamid, and Professor Dr. Bushra Abbas, aimed to provide an overview of the Minamata Convention and the importance of mercury control and management in laboratories. It focused on a series of safety and storage practices, as well as the latest alternatives to mercury in scientific research and laboratory applications.
The lecture addressed the national efforts to raise awareness about mercury and its impact on health and the environment. It aligned with the objectives of the Minamata Convention, aiming to contribute to international measures for the effective and efficient management of mercury. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste in accordance with global environmental standards.
