The Department of Biotechnology Sciences was established in 1993 as one of the scientific departments in the College of Science/University of Baghdad, based on a future and scientific vision and extrapolation of the country’s future need for scientific staff working in the applied life sciences. The department was specialized in postgraduate studies (master’s, doctorate) and turned to preliminary studies in 1999, when the department began accepting graduates of preliminary studies for the scientific branch to grant them a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology sciences for the first time in Iraq, while the department continued to grant master’s and doctorate degrees in the same specialty. The science of biotechnology is a science with many aspects and applications, so it needs other sciences in order to achieve complete integration to produce materials of industrial and medical value, as well as developing or improving the production of medicines, agricultural crops, and health care supplies, and addressing many agricultural and environmental problems and aspects related to recycling waste and producing materials. Alternative and safe for use in various fields, as well as developing scientific solutions to problems resulting from industrial development and contributing to preserving and developing development in Iraq. The department is witnessing great expansion, as it reached, in the late twentieth century, genetic engineering (genetic engineering) or molecular genetics and its applications.
